Stephen has welcomed researchers and educators to Parliament as part of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Physiological Society.

The event brought together scientists and academics from universities across the UK to showcase the role that physiology plays in addressing some of the most significant challenges facing society, including healthy ageing, chronic disease, artificial intelligence and climate change.

Speaking after the event, Sir Stephen Timms said: "I was delighted to meet researchers and educators who are helping to advance our understanding of how the human body works and responds to the challenges we face throughout our lives.

Physiology underpins so much of modern medicine and healthcare. Research in this field is helping to improve outcomes for people living with a wide range of conditions, while also informing how we respond to emerging technologies and wider societal challenges.

It is important that Parliament continues to engage with researchers and educators whose work has the potential to improve health, wellbeing and productivity. These conversations help ensure that policymakers are informed by the latest scientific evidence."

The Parliamentary Showcase highlighted the contribution that physiology makes to public health, healthcare innovation and scientific discovery. During discussions with researchers, Sir Stephen heard directly about current research projects and the challenges facing the sector, including support for scientific research, workforce development and the translation of research into practical health benefits.

The event also celebrated the Physiological Society's rich history since its foundation in 1876 and showcased the impact that physiological research has had over the past 150 years.
