Stephen has welcomed the launch of the Government's Jobs Guarantee scheme, with the first young people now starting paid employment through the programme.
The scheme offers a route into work for 18 to 24-year-olds who have been claiming Universal Credit and actively seeking employment for 18 months. Participants are matched with employers and receive paid work experience, with the Government funding up to 25 hours of work per week for six months.
More than 90,000 young people are expected to benefit from the programme over the next three years. The initiative forms part of a wider £2.5 billion investment in youth employment and is supported by major employers including Boots and OCS.
Speaking on the morning of the announcement, Stephen said: "Every young person deserves the opportunity to build a successful future through work.
"Too many young people have found themselves locked out of the labour market for extended periods. Schemes which provide real jobs, practical experience and support to overcome barriers can make a significant difference.
"Helping young people into work benefits not only those individuals, but also local communities, employers and the wider economy."
The Jobs Guarantee is initially being rolled out in areas with some of the highest levels of youth unemployment and will be expanded later this year to all eligible young people across the country. The programme also includes tailored support to help participants overcome barriers to employment and remain in work.
