Stephen has commended the decision to increase investment to support grassroots sport, as nearly 1,000 community projects across the UK benefit from upgraded local facilities.

The latest round of funding is improving pitches, changing rooms, floodlighting and multi‑sport spaces, helping clubs expand participation and widen access to sport. A further £85 million of funding is now open for applications for 2026/27, giving local organisations the chance to improve or develop facilities that will benefit communities for many years to come.

Projects across the UK have already seen the impact of earlier investment, including new all‑weather pitches, upgraded pavilions and extended playing hours through modern lighting. Many of the improved facilities are designed to be more welcoming and accessible for under‑represented groups, including women and girls.

Speaking about the announcement, Stephen said: “Communities have waited far too long for decent places to play sport and come together. This funding is already making a real difference, upgrading pitches, improving changing rooms, and opening doors to people who were previously shut out. Our local clubs are at the heart of this. They teach children life lessons after school, support men’s mental health through walking football, give women and girls safe spaces to get active, and bring neighbours together. By backing grassroots sport and committing to more investment, we are giving our young people the spaces they need to thrive.”

Applications for the next round of funding are now open for organisations in England, with further opportunities to follow in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
