stephen Welcomes Government’s Commitment to Two-State Solution

Stephen has welcomed assurances from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) that the UK Government is taking action to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to press for peace in the region.

In a letter to Stephen, Hamish Falconer MP, Minister for the Middle East, confirmed that since taking office, the Government has:

  • Pressed for an immediate ceasefire to free hostages and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

  • Restored funding to UNRWA, suspended arms exports that could be used in Gaza, and provided tens of millions of pounds in humanitarian aid.

  • Imposed sanctions on violent Israeli settlers and far-right ministers, and suspended trade negotiations with Israel.

  • Led international efforts, including a joint call with 28 partners on 21 July for an end to the war.

The Minister condemned the disproportionate escalation by Israel, warning that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is “catastrophic” and that recent Israeli actions risk violating international law. He confirmed that UK aid has already delivered 1.3 million items of life-saving medicines, 70,000 wound care packs, and over 500,000 patient consultations through UK-Med. Significantly, the Minister reiterated the Prime Minister’s announcement that the UK intends to recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, unless Israel ends its military campaign and commits to a two-state solution.

Speaking to the Newham Recorder, Stephen said: “Many constituents have contacted me about the appalling suffering in Gaza. I welcome the Government’s clear commitment to a ceasefire, humanitarian relief, and a two-state solution. Recognition of Palestine would be a vital step towards a just and lasting peace.”
