stephen seeks more aid for gaza

Stephen has written to the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon David Lammy MP, welcoming the Government’s recent announcement to recognise the state of Palestine, in line with Labour’s manifesto commitment.

In the same letter, Stephen highlighted the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, following reports of widespread destruction, acute shortages of food and medical supplies, and severe malnutrition among children. He expressed deep concern over the Israeli government’s stated intention to carry out a full military occupation of the territory.

Citing reports from the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations, as well as provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice requiring Israel to halt military operations, Stephen Timms stressed the UK’s obligations under the Genocide Convention to act to prevent atrocities and uphold international law.

Speaking about his letter, Stephen said: “My constituents are deeply alarmed by the catastrophic conditions in Gaza. The UK must play a leading role in pressing for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and the delivery of unhindered humanitarian aid. We must also support international investigations into reported violations of humanitarian law and ensure accountability for those responsible.”

In his letter, Stephen sked the Government what further measures it is considering to secure compliance with international law, ensure the safe and rapid delivery of humanitarian assistance, and work with international partners to prevent further loss of civilian life.
