Stephen writes to incoming Foreign Secretary

Stephen has written to the new Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, asking whether his appointment would change the Government’s policy to the crisis in the Middle East.

Stephen quoted a letter that the former Prime Minister sent to Baroness Sayeda Warsi in 2014 after she resigned from the government, saying its policy on the crisis in Gaza was "morally indefensible". Lady Warsi, who was previously chairman of the Conservative Party, was the first female Muslim cabinet minister when David Cameron took office in 2010.

In his letter at the time, Lord Cameron told Lady Warsi that“…Israel has the right to defend itself but we have consistently made clear our grave concerns about the heavy toll of civilian casualties and have called on Israel to exercise restraint. We have consistently called for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire.”

Stephen sought clarification from the new Foreign Secretary as to whether he still believed there was a need for a ceasefire and whether there would now be a change in government policy.
