Stephen welcomes launch of Race and Faith Manifesto

Manifesto.png

Stephen has welcomed the publication of the Labour Party’s Race and Faith Manifesto. The manifesto was launched by Jeremy Corbyn earlier today in Tottenham.

The manifesto makes a number of announcements including:

  • Extending pay gap reporting to BAME groups to tackle pay discrimination based on race;

  • Establishing a Race Equality Unit based within the Treasury which will review major spending announcements for its impact on BAME communities; and

  • End the rip-off charges for passports, visas, tests and other documentation imposed by the Home Office;

Speaking in advance of the launch, Stephen said: “Faith groups – through foodbanks, are on the frontline dealing with emergencies caused by austerity policies. They see day after the damage that’s being caused.

“In the Labour Party, we want to give faith groups a voice as they call for change. And we recognise that their faith motivates their work.”

Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, added: “Whatever your background, wherever you are from, whatever your faith or religious belief, you should have the chance to use your talents to fulfil your potential.

“Labour will tackle head on the barriers that have unfairly held back so many people and communities.”

Stephen commits to more houses in East Ham

Housing.jpg

Stephen has endorsed Labour’s policy that the Party will build over a million genuinely affordable council and social homes over 10 years.

Since 2010, local authorities have been prevented from building adequate social housing by the Tories and Lib Dems, with council budgets cut by £16bn since they came to power. This has caused the housing waiting lists to grow. Indeed, new figures show that in some London boroughs not a single social rented homes was built last year.

As well as building over a million genuinely affordable homes, a Labour government will also end the right to buy and give councils the new funding and powers they need to kick-start the biggest council house building programme in a generation; and scrap ‘no fault’ evictions, control rents for private renters and give councils new powers to enforce standards in the private rented sector.

Speaking after the launch of the manifesto, Stephen said: “After almost a decade of refusing to build council homes, it is pretty clear that the Tories can’t be trusted to fix the housing crisis. This is a message I will be telling local residents running up to election day.”

Labour sets out plans for full fibre broadband for all

The Labour Party has announced that it plans to deliver free full fibre broadband for all by bringing parts of BT into public ownership and creating a new British Broadband public service.

The next Labour government will undertake a massive upgrade in the UK’s internet infrastructure, delivering fast, secure, reliable internet connections for everyone and putting an end to patchy and slow coverage. This will boost 5G connectivity across the country.

The roll out will begin with communities that have the worst broadband access, including rural and remote communities and some inner city areas, followed by towns and smaller centres, and then by areas that are currently well-served by superfast or ultrafast broadband.

The plan will be paid for through Labour’s Green Transformation fund and taxing multinational corporations such as Amazon, Facebook and Google, and save the average person £30.30 a month.

Speaking about the announcement, Stephen - who worked in telecoms before being elected to Parliament - said: “A new public service delivering the fastest broadband free to everyone is at the heart of Labour’s plans to transform the future of our economy and society.

“By creating British Broadband as a public service, we will lead the world in using public investment to transform our country, reduce people’s monthly bills, boost our economy and improve people’s quality of life.”

Stephen praises new childcare offer

Stephen has revealed that under a Labour government, 6,226 2-4 year olds in East Ham will received 30 hours free childcare a week.

The radical expansion of free childcare to all exceeds the Lib Dems’ offer, and will save families thousands of pounds a year. It will be accompanied by opening a Sure Start centre in every community to “unlock the potential of all our children”.

New analysis by the House of Commons Library, commissioned by Labour, found that under the expansion of free childcare that Labour will deliver:

  • the average parent of a two year old not currently eligible for childcare support would save over £5,000 a year

  • parents with children aged 2-4 who are currently only eligible for 15 hours, would save over £2,500 a year.

Speaking about the announcement, Stephen said: “This is the real change that the next Labour government is going to bring to people’s lives.

“You can’t trust the Tories and the Lib Dems with childcare – they cut more than a thousand Sure Start centres across the country, and told us it’s impossible for the state to make people’s lives better by helping with childcare.

“We’re ending that. Labour’s going to deliver real change.”

Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party, echoed Stephen’s comments saying: “The Conservatives are failing a whole generation of children. Labour will deliver the real change Britain needs. Parents are struggling to afford the childcare support they need, while many children are going hungry and growing up homeless.

“Labour will open a Sure Start centre in every community and fund 30 hours’ free childcare for all two to four year olds to unlock the potential of every child.”
