Christmas is a good time to acknowledge the positive contribution made by churches, and church groups, to the nation's communities and political life.
The Labour Party is grateful to the churches for their contribution in the past year. Churches have spoken for, and practically helped, those worst affected by the economic crisis. From the Salvation Army to the Street Pastors, many have been encouraged, looked after and provided for.
The New Year brings opportunity to resolve to do more still. I, and the Labour Party, want to encourage churches nationwide to continue to play their part. Our new leader, Ed Miliband, has encouraged the UK's churches to engage in the Party's renewal: "The Labour Party is committed to being a party that listens, and churches and faith groups have valuable contributions to make. We want to continue to support our churches and to work with them in creating justice for the vulnerable and fairness for all".
We enter 2011 with renewed purpose. I look forward to seeing more of churches' great work around the country in the year ahead.
I wish you a very Happy Christmas, and every blessing in the New Year. |
