In my role as a Government advisor on faith issues and the Labour Party’s Vice-Chair for Faith Groups, I recently held a roundtable discussion with Think Jewish London, a cross-communal think tank.
The discussion focussed on cohesion, citizenship and the role of faith in public policy. The group which was set up by London Jewish Forum last year is made up of academics, policy thinkers, community, interfaith and human rights activists including leading Reform, Orthodox and Haredi thinkers.
We were joined by special advisors who have a responsibility for faith issues, along with members from the Jewish Labour Movement and the London Jewish Forum’s Labour Party Relations Group.
It was a useful and illuminating conversation which I hope to continue in the future. The Jewish Community – and other faith communities – are a key source of the values which motivate Britain. My commitment is to a growing debate and understanding between Government and faith groups and this was an excellent example. We need a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face together - and I'm grateful to Think Jewish London for helping to organise the event. |
