NEWway is run by a group of people who have a vision to support and assist the homeless in the area into more permanent accommodation. They are seeking to establish a seven day a week rolling shelter which provides shelter and support to around 15 guests per night. Each night would be a different venue – either a church or community centre – and the project will run over the coldest months of the year. The scheme will work with a number of other support services and will seek to see homeless guests move off the street and into more permanent accommodation.
Stephen said: “Over the past few months my office has dealt with an increasing number of homeless cases where the state is able to provide little or no assistance. Often people contact my office late in the day as a last resort or after spending their first night sleeping rough. Across London there are a number of admirable schemes to support these rough sleepers and I am delighted to see such scheme start up in East Ham.”
The NEWway team are looking for volunteers to help cook dinner, set up the beds and play board games with the guests. Each venue will need volunteers to assist with the evening shift; the overnight shift and also the breakfast shift.
Would you, or someone you know, be interested in helping out – even if only for one evening?
