Stephen Timms has welcomed today’s announcement that the US is to release Shaker Aamer, the last British resident to be held at Guantánamo Bay. Speaking about the decision, Stephen said:
“I am delighted at today’s announcement. Having campaigned for Shaker Aamer’s release, I hope he can now return to his family in the UK as soon as possible.
“I think it was unacceptable that Shaker Aamer – and other suspects too – were held in Guantanamo Bay without trial or charge for so long. It has always baffled me why the US Government were so keen to detain Shaker, despite pressure from the UK Government and from activists.”
“I would like to congratulate all those who worked on the campaign to free Shaker. Their efforts over the last few years have – at last – paid off.”
