Stephen has congratulated NEWway, a local homeless project in Newham, on its second birthday.
NEWway was launched in response to growing levels of poverty and rough-sleeping in Newham. It is an inter-church network with eight churches currently involved. Each church takes a turn each night to run the shelter. The shelter provides guests - who would otherwise be without accommodation - a warm bed to sleep in and a hot meal to enjoy. Furthermore, each guest also receives 1-2-1 advocacy support to help them secure longer term accommodation.
This past winter saw over 200 church members volunteer at NEWway. They helped look after 75 guests over 113 nights. By the end of the winter, 28 had been permanently settled.
Speaking about the project Stephen said: “NEWway has done an excellent job in reaching out to some of those in our area who need help the most.

"In a way it is sad that projects like NEWway are open at all. Nevertheless the efforts of the volunteers are greatly appreciated by many in the borough."
