Earlier today, Stephen officially opened the new Parcelforce Worldwide depot in the Gemini Business Park in Beckton. Parcelforce Worldwide expects the new depot to create 23 brand new jobs in the borough with around 124 people employed at the depot in total.
The new depot is part of a UK-wide expansion programme by Parcelforce Worldwide. The 10,394 square metre depot in Gemini Business Park, Hornet Way, Beckton, E6 7FF, has about four times the floor space of the previous site in Danes Road, Romford. The new depot has the capacity to hold up to 120 vehicles and handle up to thirty thousand parcels a day. The increased capacity will enable Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business to meet the growth in demand in the business-to-business, business-to-consumer and consumer-to-consumer parcels markets.
Stephen was given a tour of the new facility by operations manager, Chris Comden, and met with numerous employees who spoke positively of the new working environment they now enjoy.
Speaking after the opening and tour, Stephen said: "I am thoroughly impressed by this brand new facility and delighted Parcelforce have chosen to relocate their depot to Beckton. I welcome the creation of local jobs and the boost this facility will have for the local economy. This new development is a further indication of the regeneration taking place in this borough. and as the local MP, I celebrate it"
Mark Keleher, Area General Manager of Parcelforce Worldwide in the South East, said: “I am delighted that Stephen Timms was able to officially open Parcelforce Worldwide’s new East London depot. This depot is an essential part of our investment to grow our business. It will enable us to handle more parcels for the East London area while ensuring we continue to provide a very high level of service to all of our customers.”
