An East Ham kebab house has been recognised as one of the best in the capital at a glittering award ceremony in central London. The Afghan, on Katherine Road, was shortlisted as one of London’s best takeaway kebab shops by the British Kebab Awards 2014. It was nominated by local MP, Stephen Timms.

The awards took place at the Park Lane Hotel. Sponsored by online takeaway company,, the awards aim to recognise excellence in the kebab industry. Members of the public, along with MPs, were asked to enter the best restaurants and takeaways in their area. After this, anonymous taste-testers went around the country to compile a short-list, in time for the awards.

Speaking about the nomination, Stephen said: “I was delighted to put the Afghan forward as one of London’s best kebab shops. My staff were regular customers when my office was on Katherine Road. Indeed, they still go there now. One of them lives in West London and tells me he would happily sit on the District Line for an hour, rather than go to his local kebab shop!”

“The kebab industry in the UK is thriving – it has an estimated turnover of over £2 billion and employs 150,000 people. The industry is throwing off its image of being a ‘last resort’ on the way home, and is becoming bigger and better.”
