Today, Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, joined local residents in rolling up his sleeves and cleaning the streets of East Ham. Mr Timms was helping a group of local residents who are enthusiastically partnering with Clean Up UK on a regular basis to pick up litter from the streets. Focussing on sprucing up Colvin Road, Mr Timms joined Mr Prabha who owns East London Electronics, an electronics shop on the street, and others determined to make East Ham a more pleasant place to live.
Clean Up UK is a national initiative that is dedicated to tackling the UK’s litter problem by helping and encouraging volunteers who collect litter. Clean Up UK also partners with Keep Britain Tidy on their ‘Big Tidy Up’ campaign encourages local residents to take to the streets and tidy up their neighbourhood. You can visit www.litteraction.org.uk for more information on how to join in the big tidy up.
After filling bin liners with leaves and litter, Mr Timms said: “I am delighted that the group is going out each week around Colvin Road, and doing an impressive job of cleaning up the neighbourhood. It’s when people care about the area, and are willing to do something about it, that change for the better becomes possible. I applaud this group’s consistent hard work.”
