Last week, Stephen Timms MP visited Essex Primary School to attend a Year 5 concert entitled “Freedom from Fear”.

The performance, supported by professional musicians led by Alex Wilson, looked to draw attention to the plight of refugees in the UK and around the world through a number of musical arrangements and dances.

The assembly was the culmination of Refugee Week. As part of the lead up to the concert, children from the school had learnt about refugees and asylum seekers and used what they had learnt to devise their performances, with support from their teachers.

Speaking afterwards, Stephen Timms said: “I very much enjoyed my visit to watch the performance today. I was impressed by the way the pupils tackled a very difficult issue in a sensitive, but enjoyable, way. They spoke powerfully about issues like tolerance and understanding for others, and challenged us all to help those who come to the Borough fleeing persecution, war or famine.”
