Statement on the future of the Olympic Stadium by Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, and Lyn Brown, MP for West Ham

“We welcome yesterday’s announcement that West Ham is the preferred tenant for the Olympic Stadium.  This is the right decision for a successful Olympic legacy for East London, building on the Club’s long term record of work among young people in Newham.  We congratulate the Club on its impressive bid, and look forward to seeing it implemented.

“However, we are puzzled by the Mayor’s comments accompanying the announcement.  He said that conditions were being attached, but the only information about them is in press reports of his comments.  Obscure hints are no substitute for clear decisions.

“LLDC were in receipt of four bids.  The unanimous vote in favour of West Ham shows it was the best offer on the table by some margin.  The Club is making a substantial financial offer.  This is no sweetheart deal.

“LLDC must now spell out clearly and urgently, in a professional manner, what the conditions are, before this project collapses in a mire of delays and confusion.”
