Stephen Timms, the Member of Parliament for East Ham and Shadow Minister for Employment, made the following comment in response to December's employment figures:

“It’s worrying that unemployment is already on the rise.  Today’s figures make clear that George Osborne’s cuts are already biting – the 33,000 employment fall was entirely in the public sector.  The government’s own projection is that far more public sector workers will lose their jobs in the next few years, and the Chancellor’s cuts will have similar knock-on consequences for private sector jobs.  The government is gambling with people’s livelihoods.  With the Head of the Civil Service privately urging a ‘Plan B’, we need the Chancellor to be serious about reducing unemployment, and to look again at the scale and speed of his cuts.”
