On Friday 31 August, Stephen Timms MP visited the Udaya Restaurant on Katherine Road to present the staff with a medal after they were nominated for the Tiffin Cup 2007.

The Tiffin Cup is a year-long competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the United Kingdom.  MPs from across the country were asked to nominate a restaurant from their constituency.  Stephen Timms nominated Udaya.  The nominated restaurants were then judged and narrowed down to eleven.  The finalists took part in a “cook-off” at the House of Commons, judged by a panel of experts including the celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott.

Stephen Timms said: “In Newham we have a wide variety of excellent restaurants serving high-quality cuisine from around the world, in particular from South Asia.  Settling on one to represent East Ham was a difficult decision, but I chose to nominate the Udaya Restaurant after consulting with members of the local Labour Party.

“The Udaya Restaurant has an excellent reputation.  It did not reach the final of the Tiffin Cup, but its staff should be congratulated for their achievement in representing East Ham in this prestigious contest.”
