Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, toured Newham Council last week to see first hand their efforts to improve local services.

Stephen is responsible for the government's value for money efforts and Newham is helping to lead the way. As part of ongoing improvements the library is now open longer hours and a (Earlystart) grant was used earlier this year to open a new play area.

Newham council has made particularly good use of technology - both behind the scenes and with its new online services for residents and local businesses. More than £16m has been put to better use since Newham's efficiency programme began according to government figures.

Stephen Timms said "Newham Council has made particularly good use of technology, both behind the scenes and with new online services for residents and local businesses. More than £16m has been put to better use since Newham's efficiency programme began, and it was very useful to see first hand how local businesses and residents are benefiting from the Council's efforts to get more value for money."
