Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, Douglas Alexander MP, has called on the government to speak out about the suffering of religious minorities in Iraq.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Douglas welcomed the government’s contribution of humanitarian support and counter-terrorism expertise to the area. He added: "...We must also acknowledge that these latest outrages are part of a growing pattern of persecution – and that anti-Christian persecution, just like anti-Semitism or Islamophobia, must be called out for the evil it is."

Last year, again writing in the Daily Telegraph, Douglas urged people to have the courage to speak up for persecuted Christians around the world, saying: "We cannot, and we must not, stand by on the other side."
