Earlier today, Labour leader, Ed Miliband, hosted a Diwali reception at the Conrad Hotel in St James’s Park. He was joined by a number of other senior labour MPs including Harriet Harman, Chuka Umunna, Sadiq Khan and Keith Vaz.
Over three hundred people from community groups and temples across the country attended. Speaking to the gathering, Ed emphasised that the values of togetherness and family - celebrated during Diwali - are values which the Labour Party holds dear.
Speaking afterwards, Ed said: “Diwali is such a special time of year for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains & Buddhists across Britain. It is important we recognise this festival as it celebrates the idea of good over evil, and the symbolic lighting of the lamps reminds us that we should join together to build a stronger society.”
Stephen Timms, Labour's Faith Envoy, added: "I am delighted Ed was able to host the reception this evening. Diwali is a hugely important festival and I am glad that Labour are continuing to build on our historic links with the Indian Diaspora in the UK."
