10 Steps
Stephen Timms and Newham We Are What We Do recommend the following ten steps all help to reduce carbon emissions - and save money too!
1. Turn your central heating thermostat down by 1°C - could cut heating bills by up to 10 per cent, saving around £30 per year.
2. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
3. Unplug appliances when they are not in use - don't leave them on standby.
4. For short trips in Newham, cycle, walk or use Public Transport - transport accounts for nearly a third of a typical person's carbon footprint.
5. Use the half-load or economy programme on your washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, if you're not filling it up - save energy and reduce colour fade!
6. Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the element in an electric kettle).
7. Fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off - a dripping hot water tap wastes energy, and can leak enough hot water in a week to half fill a bath!
8. Replace your light bulbs with energy saving ones - Lighting accounts for 10-15% of electricity in most homes. Energy saving light bulbs can last 12 times longer.
9. Insulate Your Home - you can install loft installation yourself, and save up to £200 per year. A third of heat in a non-insulated home is lost through the walls, so cavity wall
insulation can save another £150 per year.
10. Energy Supply - you can buy zero emission electricity from a 100% renewable supplier.
