Last week, Alistair Darling delivered the final budget before the election. It was the climax to a huge amount of work over the past year by all of us in the Treasury. We can see clearly now that the Government’s judgments over the past couple of years have been right. It was right to intervene to rescue the banking system from collapse. It was right to support the economy – families and businesses – through the world’s worst economic crisis since the 1930s. As a result, we have come through the downturn with much less damage than many expected –...

A rap group of some repute has gone as far as to name themselves “The Newham Generals” in its honour! I shall not pass judgement on the quality of the music, of course, but it is a mark of the place the hospital has in the hearts of some. Soon, more people will be able to feel proud to be a Newham General baby. Last Friday, I knocked out the symbolic first brick for an expansion of maternity services at the site.
Last month I took the Eurostar to Paris. It was a good trip for two reasons. First, because I was able to achieve something useful. Since the G20 summit at Excel last April, there has been a big international push to tackle tax evasion and avoidance. In the UK we have signed 21 tax information exchange agreements with other countries since January 2009 – giving our tax inspectors additional information. Around the world, there has been more progress on tax information exchange in the past year than in the previous ten put together. And extra money is starting to...

But who are they and how have they got their jobs? Were many of them previously unemployed? You need to get behind the statistics to find out if the hopes we all had for the Olympics giving new chances to local people are being fulfilled. Denis is a remarkable man. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This week I want to set out measures to secure economic recovery and prepare for future growth. Sir Tim Berners Lee is the man who – working in Geneva twenty years ago – invented the world wide web. He has been helping the Government for the past few months, advising on placing Government data online, so that people can use it. The scale is huge. The Prime Minister set out ahead of the summit proposals for an agreement that is ambitious, effective, and fair. The people taking part were elderly Newham residents who will benefit from these changes. This is one of the measures The Queen talked about in her speech to Parliament last Wednesday. The Government’s Manufacturing Advisory Service had helped thousands of companies to modernise. We were making almost twice as many cars in Britain as 25 years ago. Production in Britain was rising fast, but it didn’t feel much like a comeback, because the number of manufacturing workers was still falling. But is that about to change? This summer, at Florentia Clothing Village, Tottenham, I saw revived textile manufacturing. Their problem is bolstering the depleted workforce, and finding enough skilled people. After a tumultuous and uncertain year – global credit crunch, banking crisis and unprecedented worldwide downturn – it is clear the General Election will provide the country with a very stark choice. Eight years after he left, there is still no Asian player in any of the top four tiers of the English game. Why such a stark contrast to the success of black players? But more needs to be done to achieve the 2020 target. So, a fortnight ago, I presented a Government bill in the House of Commons, making the 2020 target legally binding.
