I started my day by meeting with a constituent who has a long running employment problem. I undertook to forward her concerns to those responsible. I then travelled to the Cygnet Hospital at Winsor Park, Beckton, to cut the ribbon to mark the opening of their new Learning Disability Ward. A seminar was being held at the hospital, bringing together people from local health services, so that everyone knew the facilities which are being provided.
After the ceremony, I travelled to Queen Mary University, Mile End, to meet with the Principal, Simon Gaskell, at the invitation of the Chancellor, Nick Montague, who I used to know when he was a senior civil servant. I was also given a tour of the very attractive campus – the first time I have properly looked round. It is built around a historic Jewish cemetery.
After lunch I travelled to the First Steps Nursery in Sebert Road for their re-launch, with Cllr Quintin Peppiatt. This is a Montessori nursery established 21 years ago by current Principal Maria Adesegha, and parents – and ex pupils – told me how much they appreciated her efforts.
After this engagement I went to discuss current challenges with a group of committed businesses in Green Street. We discussed how to improve business conditions locally. Following from this appointment I met in McDonalds, High Street North, with another group of Newham business owners who have been severely affected by the disruptive road-works. Everyone in East Ham shares an interest in having a thriving High Street.
