My usual Friday in East Ham was unfortunately cut short as I was called back to Westminster to take part in a television discussion on youth unemployment. However, I was still able to spend a wonderful morning in the constituency.
I began the day by meeting Sylvia Islam at East Ham station. Sylvia is currently doing a two week work experience placement in my Westminster office. Like all work experience students, Sylvia spends her Fridays with me, meeting with the residents of East Ham and our local business community. First up for Sylvia and I was a breakfast reception at City Airport to launch the City Airport Stand Replacement Project (ASRP) The project is needed because the new generation of aircraft that will fly into the airport – quieter and more fuel efficient – have longer wing spans, and so will not be able to fit in the current aircraft bays. It was a good opportunity to learn more about the planned development, with councillors and local residents.
My very short day in East Ham ended with a visit to Kingsford Community School to meet with the new school prefects, wearing impressive new gowns. I also had my first chance to meet and congratulate the new Newham Young Mayor, Abraham Male. My visit allowed me to witness all the amazing work that is going on at Kingsford. From Kingsford I drove in to Westminster, to take part in the ‘Daily Politics’ programme.
